ECP to hold Karachi LG polls under army supervision

KARACHI: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Saturday announced to organize the upcoming Local Government elections in Karachi under the supervision of army, saying the polls will be organized on December 5 at all costs.

Addressing a press conference, Secretary ECP Babar Yaqoob Fateh pointed out that out of the total of 4141 polling stations, just 234 are normal while the rest of them either fall under the category of 'sensitive' or ‘extremely sensitive’.

He said in case it is decided to place Rangers personnel inside polling stations, it will be ensured that they are granted powers of a magistrate.

Babar Yaqoob Fateh said the District Returning Officers will have the powers to register cases against anyone found violating the ECP code of conduct during the polls.

He complained that some provincial institutions including Steel Mill and Port Qasim were not extending cooperation.

Four MQM workers remanded to Rangers custody for 90 days

KARACHI: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Saturday handed over four workers of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) to Rangers custody on 90-day remand.

Four MQM workers, who were arrested from Korangi, were presented before the judge of ATC by the Rangers.

The Rangers Law Officer told the ATC that Mohammad Imran, Waseem Ahmed, Muhammad Ibrahim and Asghar Yaqoob were involved in grave crimes including target killings, acts of extortion and possessing illegal weapons.

"One of the accused, Asghar Yaqoob, used to provide weapons for target killings", Rangers Law Officer told the ATC.

According to Rangers spokesman, one of the accused identified as Waseem Ahmed alias Shama is MQM's incharge of Korangi sector and was involved in target killing, extortion and land grabbing.

Meanwhile, a local court has given Pasban General Secretary, Usman Moazzam, to police custody on 10 days physical remand.

According to police, the Pasban leader was arrested over allegedly providing financial assistance to terrorists and having links with proscribed organization.

MQM ends protest rally in Karachi

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) ended its protest rally against raids on its campaign offices and arrests of its workers ahead of the local government elections in Karachi.

The protest rally was stopped near the Quaid-e-Azam’s mausoleum in Karachi and was not allowed to proceed towards the red zone as they had initially planned.

MQM had called for a protest rally that was to march from Liaquatabad till the Sindh Rangers headquarters to register their protest against raids and arrests of its workers demanding that the party be allowed to contest the upcoming local government elections freely.

ISLAMABAD: Expressing serious concern over increasing number of hangings of opposition leaders in Bangladesh, Pakistan on Thursday said it would lodge its protest over the human rights violation.

Briefing the media here on Thursday, Foreign Office (FO) spokesman Khalilullah Qazi said Pakistan has taken a note of Bangladesh’s protest communiqué handed over to Pakistan High Commissioner and a press release issued by Dhaka.

Pakistan, India govts give green signal for cricket series in Sri Lanka

Hours after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif gave the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) clearance for a Pakistan-India cricket series in Sri Lanka, Indian media reported that the country's government has also given a green signal to its cricket board for the proposed series next month.

BCCI senior official Rajeev Shukla said the much-anticipated India-Pakistan series will happen tentatively from December 15 at the neutral venue.

Makhdoom Amin Fahim passes away in Karachi

KARACHI: Senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Makhdoom Amin Fahim passed away at a private hospital in Karachi on Saturday. He will be laid to rest this afternoon. Fahim had been ailing for some time and had returned to Pakistan late last month to spend some time family and friends. He had been brought to Karachi via an air ambulance on the 26th of October. Prior to his return, the senior leader and veteran politician had been receiving treatment in Germany, England and the UAE and in light of his deteriorating health he wished to return home to Pakistan for a few days, his spokesman Aslam Pirzada told Geo News upon his return last month.

LAHORE: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had declared 960 out of a total 11,869 polling stations highly sensitive for the upcoming second phase of local government elections in 12 districts of Punjab province.

According to documents obtained by Geo News, the election commission has classified polling stations into three categories: Normal, Sensitive, and Highly Sensitive.

Out of a total of 11,869 polling stations, 3,112 have been declared sensitive in all 12 districts.

Policeman martyred in attack near Super Highway Read On Utv pakistan
